Motor Cruising Courses

Introduction to Motor Cruising - 1 day

This course gives you the opportunity to 'dip your toe in the water' and try motor boating for the first time. No previous boating experience is necessary. The focus of the course is on boating safety and basic seamanship with the aim of becoming a useful crew member.

RYA Helmsman Course - 2 days

Some practical experience and some basic knowledge are useful for this course, but not essential. The content covers boating safety, helmsmanship, boat handling and an introduction to engine maintenance.

This is the first step towards becoming a confident and skilled skipper of your own boat.

Day Skipper Shorebased Course

A comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for Helmsmen. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board.

RYA Day Skipper Practical - 5 days

This is the most popular of the Motor Cruising Courses. Some practical experience, with an assumed knowledge of the Day Skipper Shore Based Course, is suggested but not essential.

The aim is to teach practical pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a motor cruiser safely in familiar waters by day.

The course also includes some night cruising experience, with emphasis on leaving/entering a harbour, considerations for keeping a look-out, and identifying marks by night. The RYA Day Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate is awarded to those who achieve a satisfactory standard.

Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course

This is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate.

The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.

The assumed level of knowledge before starting this course is the Day Skipper Shorebased Course.

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical - 5 days

If you would like to build on the experience gained in the Day Skipper Practical, and the navigational knowledge acquired in the Coastal Skipper Shore Based Course, then this advanced certificate is for you. Many of the topics are similar to Day Skipper but are covered in greater depth, with the aim of perfecting the skills and techniques required to skipper a motor cruiser safely on coastal and offshore passages, by day and by night. The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate is awarded to successful candidates.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation - Practical - 5 days

This is for the experienced skipper who wishes to prepare for the Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination. The syllabus is the same as that of Coastal Skipper but more than 2,500 miles at sea should be covered before considering it. The aim is to prepare a very competent candidate, qualified to skipper a motor cruiser, on any passage, which can be completed without the use of astro-navigation.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is the ultimate and highly-prized achievement of any skipper.

RYA/MCA Examinations

We can arrange RYA/MCA Examinations for successful Coastal Skipper Practical candidates and for Yachtmaster Offshore students with an independent RYA Examiner. These take place on the last day of the course, thus offering a complete training and assessment facility.

The examination fee is an extra cost and is paid directly to the Examiner on the day.

Practical Powerboating Courses (UK Only)

RYA Level 1 - An Introduction to Powerboating - 1 day

This course provides a practical introduction to powerboat handling skills. No previous experience is necessary and the focus is on launching and recovering, safety aspects, techniques and manoeuvres and some theory.

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course Completion Certificate is awarded to those who achieve a satisfactory standard.

RYA Level 2 - International Certificate of Competence - 2 days

The aim of this course is to provide the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver to gain the ICC. The syllabus covered is similar to that of the Motor Cruising Course.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course Completion Certificate and the International Certificate of Competence are awarded to the successful candidate.

Advanced Powerboat

Candidates should be competent to Level 2, with knowledge of navigation and chartwork to day skipper shorebased.

Seeking to further improve the level of service we offer our valued Sealine customers, two new training programs have been created, customised specifically with the Sealine customer in mind, and based on popular demand.

Short Range Certificate - 1 Day

This one day course is spent in our warm, comfortable classroom. Using electronic simulators, we will explain the procedures necessary when operating a maritime VHF transmitter with DSC (digital selective calling). Please remember that a licence to operate a VHF maritime radio is a legal requirement.

First Aid - 1 day

This course also takes place in our classroom. It is a relaxed and light-hearted yet important look at how to deal with casualties when in maritime situations.

Radar - 1 day

Radar is possibly the most misinterpreted of all the navigational equipment we use on our boats today. The rules of the road (IRPCS) tell us that we should keep a good lookout at all times; this means using radar if appropriate. Importantly though, if we must use our radar, as suggested, we must also know how to do this correctly. One day in the classroom will help you understand how to get the best from this sophisticated piece of equipment.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC) assessment - 1 day

For those wishing to charter for their holiday, ICC is the recognised certificate of competence. We are only permitted to assess British citizens and/or bona-fide British residents. This certificate is valid for five years, after which time you will need to reapply to the RYA for a new certificate.

Please remember that children under 16 cannot have an ICC certificate but are eligible for endorsed RYA qualifications.
